On December 11, 2023, Ms Hilde van der Meer, Commissioner Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, presented the Deshima Netherlands Awards 2023. The Eindhoven startup VivArt-X collaborate with Smart BioMaterials Consortium (SBMC) and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) over the next three years on the accelerated development of a synthetic biomaterial for forming healthy breast tissue after breast surgery. An amount of 1.4 million has been reserved for the project. Fifty percent of the costs are borne by the collaborating partners. Thirty-five percent comes from the European subsidy program OPZuid. The Province of Noord-Brabant accounts for the remaining 15 percent.

'Solar Team Eindhoven', a student team from the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the southern Netherlands works every two years on a project with the themes 'solar panels' and 'mobility'. Its latest project is an 'off-roader that runs solely on solar energy'. They are developing a solar-powered car that can drive on middle of nowhere such as deserts where there is no charging infrastructure.

"Impulse Printing" enables high volume printing on 3D surfaces. As our electronic products, such as smartphones and medical devices, become smaller and more multifunctional, the semiconductor industry is moving to "advanced packages" that place more components in a smaller space. These packages, which integrate multiple semiconductors in a 3D arrangement, are currently made by wire bonding, in which wire is connected one by one with needles, making high-speed mass production difficult. However, FononTech from the Netherlands has developed a revolutionary printing technology called "impulse printing" to solve this problem.

Silicon Valley’s leading digital products and solutions company, today announced its expansion in the European market to serve its growing customer base. This will involve a major expansion of its current operations in the Netherlands (Eindhoven) and the UK (Nottingham), as well as the opening of a new near-shore development center in Portugal.

Few companies have provided scientific equipment to one winner of the Nobel Prize for chemistry, yet Thermo Fisher Scientific’s electron microscopes have been used by two winners. Furthermore, both winners using Thermo Fisher Scientific’s equipment happened in less than a decade. In 2011, Dan Shechtman received the award for proving the existence of quasicrystals. While in 2017, Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson were jointly awarded the prize for their work involving cryo-electron microscopy developments.

Two years ago, Soliton Systems, a leading global technology company headquartered in Japan, entered a successful partnership with the 5G Hub at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven to demonstrate futuristic applications made possible by the emergence of 5G, together with VodafoneZiggo and Ericsson. The German family-owned company LEMKEN is investing in a new factory, which will be built in Dinteloord, Brabant, not far from the current location in Stad aan 't Haringvliet. LEMKEN will establish at the Agro Food Cluster Nieuw Prinsenland. The new factory is scheduled to open its doors at the end of 2023 and will accommodate at least 30 additional employees.

The Brabant region wins the fDi Strategy Award 2022/2023 as mid-sized European Region. The strategy focus, which the Brabant Development Agency (BOM) has been applying since 2014/2015 to attract and guide foreign companies, is one of the reasons for fDi to award this Strategy Award.

Tilburg, February 17, 2022 – The 53 foreign companies that established in Brabant last year marks a slight rise over the record level of 50 in 2019. This figure demonstrates that the province has made a complete recovery from the 2020 Covid-related low of 35. Companies view Brabant as a strategic region in terms of further optimizing value chains in the European market. fDi Intelligence cited the manner in which Brabant is capitalizing on the decentralization trend as one of the reasons it was awarded the Strategy Award for Mid-Sized Regions 2022/2023.

Brabant is responsible for 80 percent of Dutch patents in the field of medical technology. It is a sign that this province plays a key role in European innovation.

The Israel-based producer of plant-based meat, Redefine Meat, is setting up operations in the Netherlands to serve the growing demand for sustainable meat products in Europe. The food innovator has located in the town of Best, amidst several food innovation companies in the Dutch agrifood ecosystem. It plans to start production by the end of the year. Redefine Meat explains its ambitions in a press release: ‘With European expansion, the company solidifies a roadmap to become the world’s largest meat company, harnessing technology instead of animals’.

Axelera AI, a Dutch spin-off of the emerging technologies unicorn Bitfury Group, established it’s headquarter at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. The company also has R&D offices in Leuven (BE) and Zurich (CH).

The 20th edition of the Dutch Design Week took place last week in Eindhoven, Brabant. In 2016, the logistics activities of Samsung Electronics in Europe were transferred into Samsung SDS, a separate division for its logistics and IT operations. Foreign companies await the Post-Coronavirus Age. Tilburg – Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, there is unprecedented interest among foreign companies in setting up facilities in Brabant. Brexit is only one of the reasons for that, and the primary cause is that an increasing number of foreign companies are looking to relocate or expand existing activities in Brabant as a means of risk-spreading, or decentralization.

Advipro, a Belgian company, was founded in 2003 and is an independent specialist offering flexible total services to the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical and high tech industry. Their activities are focused on the quality of the design, implementation and operation of critical systems, processes and facilities in regulated environments, with product and patient safety as a common theme. In 2018 Advipro established an office in Breda, the Netherlands, to support the growing amount of projects there. Now, the company is expanding its business activities in Brabant and the Netherlands.

On March 1st, the Smart Industry hub Gate2 in Gilze en Rijen launched the first Cyber Physical Factory (CPF) in the Netherlands. CPF is a testing ground where SMEs and knowledge institutions collaborate on industrial innovation projects. This production test line, which is unique in the Netherlands, is equipped with the latest artificial intelligence techniques, such as robotics, sensors, PLCs, augmented and virtual reality, digital twin, Internet of Things and 5G. Here, students and employees will follow training and education, and companies test their products and processes before they enter the market.

Despite its size, the Netherlands packs a punch in agritech, and investors have noticed.

In 2019, companies, institutions and higher education in the Netherlands spent just over 17.5 billion euros on Research and Development (R&D).
