High Tech Systems & Materials
In Brabant, every component, every conceivable machine, every possible integrated system, or cyber-physical system can be invented, designed, developed, produced, assembled, marketed, commercialized, and maintained – even remotely, if necessary. This focus on complex, high-tech challenges and their solutions is a powerful attractor for talent. Researchers and inventors, driven to find solutions for some of the most pressing global challenges, are drawn to Brabant due to the high density of tech companies, world-renowned knowledge institutions, and the opportunity to plug into any part of the value chain that fits their specialism. In addition, major OEMs such as ASML and Philips and the high number of tier-1, -2, and -3 suppliers provide ample opportunity for finding the right match between talent and employer.
Brabant: Industrialization hub for deep tech
The complete value chain, from R&D to industrialisation, is present in this innovative region. Build on a strong foundation and advanced manufacturing legacy of major tech/industrial companies located here historically, such as Philips, ASML, VDL, and DAF Trucks, Brabant is the 7th most innovative region in Europe.
Unsurprisingly, it is with pride that Brabant has created the most complex machine in the world – ASML’s extreme ultraviolet lithography machine for the fabrication of the chips that sit in everything from iPhones to automobiles and satellites; a ‘hypermachine’ operating at the absolute cutting edge of human technical capability. ASML’s machines are so critical to everyday life that they influence world geopolitical equilibrium. With ASML as a leading system integrator, Brabant has further developed its rich and deep partner network of highly qualified suppliers active in high tech.
WIth Eindhoven University of Technology, the essential fundemental knowledge is present to enable the next generation of chip technology. The Future Chips Flagship programm is the living example of that where a large number of research groups collaborate on topics like future semicon equipment, processes and materials. By involving the industry, the steps is also taken to move from fundamental research to applied research, paving the way to new applications and future markets.
Brabant is the region that supports deep tech companies to scale their technology and solutions with support in all relevant stages of a company journey, from R&D to design & engineering and from system integration to scaling a solution through our high complexity and low volume manufacturing capabilities.
A solid deep tech foundation
Brabant is one of the few places in the world with such dense knowledge and industrial experience on the following 3 pillars for deep tech;
Semicon
A deep and rich network of both OEMs and suppliers active in semicon equipment and chip design with companies like ASML, Philips, ThermoFisher, NXP and VDL ETG . For equipment, Brabant is renowned for its unique expertise and capabilities in precision mechatronics and for chip design, there is strong focus on mixed signal, analog, power electronics and RF but also on next generation chip designs based on AI, through companies like Axelera AI.
Integrated Photonics
A complete Integrated Photonics value chain that supports from the early stages of design to manufacturing chips through foundry operations such as Smart Photonics and Xiver. Photon Delta NL manages a multiyear innovation program for integrated photonics in the Netherlands and is also based in Eindhoven. The ecosystem is complemented with a strong knowledge base with research institutes such as TNO and IMEC, collaborating in Holst Center and managing facilitities such as the Photonics Lab.
Quantum
The quantum hub has a strong knowledge base at the University of Technology in Eindhoven and various testbeds such as the open quantum communication testbed and for industrialization, a consortium of high tech manufacturing companies collaborates in the quantum manufacturing alliance (QMA).
Collaborative innovating and scaling
For the next generation of chip technology that enable future solutions to solve societal and environmental challenges it’s important that knowledge is brought together and dependencies are managed.
Typical for Brabant is the way how we collaborate, it’s in the DNA of people and therewith companies. Customers and suppliers are used to work on complex matters together, building true partnerships and ensuring speed of development. Talent is involved with industry projects in an early stage, making them strong future assets, both from technical as well as entrepreneurial perspective.
The infrastructure in Brabant supports this way of collaboration. Innovation starts at the campus of Eindhoven university of technology from where it’s developed into IP and applications at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. With over 300 companies, innovation centers and many shared facilities and services, it offers both start ups and established companies common ground to innovate. Brainport Industry Campus is the place to manufacture these new applications in collaboration with a dense network of advanced manufacturing partners. This campus will further expand in the upcoming years to support the scaling which is critical for the success of deep tech. The Automotive Campus has a more specific focus, which is on future mobility andby looking at solving future challenges in view of safety and sustainability. .
This unique complementary campus setup supports deep tech companies to productize or scale their solutions supported by a wide and deep network of industraliationindustrialization partners and highly qualified suppliers.
Brabant: An industrialization hub for deep tech globally
Where semicon, integrated photonics and quantum meet, Brabant provides a unique breeding ground for scaling up innovations — from lab to fab, from the drawing table to the world. This is where ideas grow into impact.
The goal: position Brabant among the global industrialization hubs for deep tech, being able to support any company in the world that needs to productize and scale up its deep tech solution.
