Photonics

Brabant has emerged as a leading hub for photonics, thanks to its strong focus on innovation and research. Key technologies such as integrated photonics can drive development in energy-efficient applications. Brabant’s success in photonics can be attributed to amongst others the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, which is home to PhotonDelta, an independent growth accelerator and open platform for the integrated photonics industry.

High-Value Integrated Photonics

Eindhoven’s photonics ecosystem builds on more than a century of optics, light-and-electronics know-how—from Philips founding its NatLab in 1914 and evolving as a hub for lamp, lighting and imaging technologies—through to the strong optics and photonics research now anchored in TU/e. At the university, the Eindhoven Hendrik Casimir Institute (EHCI) unifies TU/e’s strengths in integrated photonics and quantum technology to drive hardware for energy-efficient and secure information systems. Together with spin-offs like SMART Photonics, EFFECT Photonics, centres like Holst (TNO/imec) on High Tech Campus, and the national ecosystem PhotonDelta, the region is a leader in photonic integrated circuits (PICs), foundry services, research-to-market innovation, and applied sensors for telecom, healthcare, mobility and beyond.
